in the trenches: modern utility
If you like function in your fashion, then this is your go-to look. Like so many things in life, balance is key: rugged and refined, feminine and masculine, structured and fluid. 2019’s utility reinvention is about harnessing these opposing forces to create an elevated everyday uniform,
The modern utility is simple and streamlined with fluid cuts in softer fabrics, a vast departure from the full-tilt combat looks for the 1990’s or early 2000’s.
Consider a balletic pleated skirt in muted khaki or streamline, high wasted utility pants in soft cotton or silk. The overall effect should unfussy sophistication, not a Rambo inspired dress up.
The colours are also softer this time around. Muted and neutral is the guiding principle: think sage instead of military green. Sand, camel, cream and beige are all great and work well with tan, white or black accessories. This look is also very wearable in all black with some unusual or unexpected accessories (like chunky sandals) to create interest.
This utility reinvention also taps into the ‘accessomorphosis’ trend: the transformation of bags and wallets into clothing. A belt bag or other utilitarian accessories fit right in here, particularly if they bring in pops of colour such as orange or yellow.
Here’s some inspo to get you marching towards this fresh take on a timeless look.
