Capsule classics: The Blazer

Capsule classics: The Blazer

what’s The one item of clothing that spans Monday to Sunday, all types of events, office cultures, and industries?

It’s the blazer.

Unbeatable for its versatility and ability to cross from day to night and weekday to weekend, a good blazer will see you through almost every situation.

I love the way a blazer elevates everything, from shorts to jeans to sweatpants (yep thumbs up to blazer + trackies).  My favourite weekend outfit right now: black sweats, white t, white sneakers, denim shirt & black blazer.  Honestly I can hardly think of a single thing that doesn’t work with a blazer (swimwear & pyjamas maybe?)

It’s an easy item to pull off with a few basic considerations:

  1. Make sure the shape, especially the length suits you.  A blazer that is too long or baggy may swamp a smaller person. Double breasted in particular can be boxy which has the potential to be unflattering. Having said that, if you can pull off a slouchy oversized blazer then go for it.

2. If you’re going for a tailored style then the fit at the shoulders is a critical dimension to consider. A squared off shoulder and nice and flat fit across the back is the aim.

3. Good quality fabric is essential.  Cheap fabric looks cheap. You can pick it a mile off. A quality fabric will sit flat, maintain its shape and resists creasing.

4. Invest in classic colours and patterns. You will get years of wear from a black or navy blazer or even a neutral plaid.  Spend as much as you can reasonably afford and make sure the style works well with everything from a suit to jeans.  Spend less on bright colours or bold patterns.  Even if you love them at the time, trust me you just won’t wear them as often.

Here are some looks that prove that the blazer is meant for more than just the daily grind.
